Teaching and learning in ELA involves the four domains of reading, writing, speaking and listening. Students read, annotate, and analyze written text from the five genres of literature (fiction, non-fiction, poetry, drama and mythology). ELA consists of studying and correctly using rules of grammar and acquiring new grade level vocabulary and using these words correctly in their original writing. Students learn to write clear, coherent open-ended responses to thoughtful questions; think critically and abstractly; contribute to class discussions and begin to find their own unique style of writing. In addition, students read and analyze literature written by authors such as Poe, Seuss, Dickens, Anne Frank, Malala, London, O'Henry, Angelou, Kipling and Hughes to name just a few. The study of reading and writing at All Saints Middle School gives students the opportunity to find their own writing voice and to develop and foster a lifelong love of reading across the literary genres.
