Our math program is driven by Open Up Resources which is a problem based curriculum that requires our students to think critically and solve real world problems. Each grade daily starts with a warm up that requires students to think and scan for details. It is followed by some activities that start with independent thinking, then shared in small groups, and lastly a class discussion where students share their mathematical thinking for others to hear and relate to. In our class we work together to grow ourselves as mathematical thinkers and problem solvers. Topics are covered as follows.
Fifth grade starts the year off with volume of rectangles, travels through fractions of all operations, multi-digit multiplication and division, decimals and finishes the year with shapes on the coordinate plane.
Sixth grade begins with area and surface area of some three dimensional shapes, followed by ratios, rates and percentages, strengthening division with fractions and decimals, working with expressions, introducing rational numbers, and ending with data sets and distributions.
Seventh grade dives into scale drawings, raises the bar with proportional relationships and percentages, circle measurements, rational number arithmetic and explanations, expressions and inequalities, angles, triangles and prisms, and finally probability and sampling.
Eighth grade prepares the students for an easy transition into high school Algebra. We start the year with Transformations including dilations, and glide into linear relationships, systems and equations, next we explore functions and volumes, analyze association in data, investigate exponents and scientific notation, and end with the Pythagorean Theorem.
